"Prescriptions come from the outside, but transformation happens within. Prescriptions assume that something needs to be fixed; transformations, however, reveal the healing that already exists – the process of reaching wholeness and completeness.” - Gabor Maté
Prescriptions are generally understood as external interventions; a set of instructions or treatment methods provided by an expert or authority aimed at solving a particular problem. This approach searches for the root cause outside of the individual and assumes that the solution must also come from the outside. Healing through prescriptions is somewhat like a mechanical repair process; a specific solution is offered to fix a specific problem. However, this approach is often insufficient. Transformation, on the other hand, offers a completely different perspective. According to Gabor Maté, transformation is not an external "fix" but an internal healing process. It involves recognizing and reactivating the potential for wholeness and completeness that already exists within the person. In other words, transformation is less about repairing something and more about unlocking the healing capacity that is inherent in one's nature. This process involves deeply understanding oneself, resolving emotional and spiritual blockages, and connecting with one's inner resources. It views healing as a journey and a process of self-discovery. When a person becomes aware of their inherent potential for wholeness and learns to live in alignment with it, true transformation occurs. This is also a self-empowering and sustainable healing process because the individual is no longer dependent on external authorities but learns to trust their inner guidance.
In today's world, many treatment methods focus on suppressing symptoms or making superficial corrections. However, the transformative approach that Maté suggests requires addressing the human being in a more profound, holistic manner. This approach focuses not only on the physical body but also on the mental, emotional, and spiritual dimensions. True transformation becomes possible when all of these dimensions are considered together. Therefore, Maté's words issue an inner call: to listen to ourselves more deeply, to trust our inner wisdom and healing resources, and to live as whole beings in this world.
